I am a student at the University of Salford, studying Graphic Design.

Although currently specialising in Motion & Interactivity, I enjoy all aspects of graphic design including typography, branding, logo design and illustration.

This blog is a record of my studies, as well as a place where I can post anything that inspires me.

Some of my favourite ones - not perfect - need developing with colour etc but quite happy with these designs. I don’t get to design logos often doing motion so I’m quite happy with the outcome of these in a few hours. It’s just about getting a strong concept to start with rather than flying straight into Illustrator and trying fonts out.

Some of the development of the logo for the sssshow. The name is very playful so decided to aim to create a friendly logo.

A third variation of the logo - keeping with the same concept - I found it to be quite a good idea, so slept on it and developed it this morning. Tried quite a lot of playful fonts as this suits the nature of the name - I don’t personal feel a serious/sophisticated typeface works so much for the name.

A second version of the below logo/identity for the show - this time more playful. The name is quite difficult form to visualise in a serious way - so like the idea of a bold, in your face type logo - this adds to the element of the show being a badly kept secret.

My logo idea for the show following the new name decided yesterday in the meeting - I’v done lots of experimenting around this idea that I will take to the meeting today.
Because of he simplicity of the design, the logo is bold, memorable and to the point. The hand on lips could be used solely as a symbol/icon for the show.

These initial ideas were based around the secret sssshow idea - the concept is that all of the letters are wrapping themselves round the word ‘secret’ - like tape - trying to keep it secret - which isn’t working as it is still legible - secret is the only letter they cross, all the other letters aren’t ‘taped’ down - needs a bit of further development and might have a go at designing a logo to go in the bottom right corner of the screen - now that the name ‘SSSHOW’ has been decided - it’s still gong to have the secret element - so it could be that I produce a few posters like this with different phrases on them, each with the word secret strapped down by everything else - all each with the same logo on which will most likely be ‘sssshow’ - a sort of memorable icon/logo.

The colours are just a combination I liked at the time and can developed. As can the font.

Been experimenting with some visuals for a couple of the names for the show - this one is for SUNQ (Salford UNI + Northern Quarter) - The venue where the exhibition will be held is under 2022NQ so the concept for these pieces are that we are under the northern quarter. This was a popular choice yesterday - mainly due to its simplicity and straight to the point, however hasn’t been chosen for the shows name.

Social Networking & Online Presence

I use lots of websites and have been building an online presence over the last couple of years whilst studying at uni - here are the websites I use and what i use them for - feel free to follow anything.

Facebook - This is used family and friends - but mainly acquaintances. People I know - lots of designers/lots of people not - this is used mainly for fun and contacting people I know. I may use this and create a page for my designs - but this doesn’t seem to be a common avenue to take at the moment….maybe if I ever Freelance it could be an option.

Twitter - I started using Twitter in the second year - and since then I follow anybody I am interested in in the design world - ranging from students/companies/freelancers/bloggers/ - I don’t often get a chance to browse through my Twitter feed, but when I do there is always  content and it’s become one of the first places I turn to when looking for inspiration.

StumpleUpon - Another great website I have recently started using - I always find inspiration here - and its lots of fun just browsing for a few hours and seeing what comes up next - again tho is a great tool for finding unexpected inspiration and a useful alternative to the bookshelf. (just realised iv stumbled over 4000 times….!!)

Pinterest - Still getting the hang of this one - but love the concept of it - i’v started several design boards where I am posting really interesting pieces of work - over time this will also be a place to come to for inspiration - it seems to be popular at the moment.

Vimeo - My vimeo account is where all of my finished motion pieces go and final hand-ins for projects. There are quite a few on there now and recently my work has started to be watched a bit more than it used - especially the piece I did for the Salford Carnival. Now that I have finished uni I am going to structure my Vimeo a bit more in ready for my self promotion - ensuring it fetters my best work.

YouTube - I’v only recently started using YouTube for my personal use - its useful to me to upload any motion tests I produce so that are can share work I’m doing on other sites.

Behance - Another site I have ben using for a while (although needs revamping) is Behance. This was intended to initially show my print work, however will be tailored to include all of my  best pieces when I prepare the next stage of my portfolio soon.

Tumblr - I enjoy using Tumblr, its a place where I can document anything I am doing and working on - a place to keep my thought - and has become I diary of my studies and progress. I intend to keep using these blogs:

NMP - I will use this to continue to document my NMP. Now that the work has been submitted, it isn’t the end of the project for me yet - as I intend to try and get my book made for the iPad. I will continue to blog my learning process with this.

ProCon - This will become my main blog from now on blogging things that inspire me and also my progress in design from here on. My self promotion and and portfolio is the next step to get sorted, as well as looking for placements/jobs/experience wherever I can and hopefully something will come up soon.
